My village Peikulam hasn’t always looked as green. We always depended on well water or the rains to cultivate our dry lands. When Srinivasan Services Trust (SST) took over our village, they tested the soil and water and taught us about water management and the many other facets of farming, which we were unaware of. We started adopting new methods on 40 hectares of land, which has now spread across 135 hectares. Our biggest worry was, how do we maximise our income from our dry, arid lands. We learnt of drip and sprinkler irrigation. We worked together and took small steps to get better at what we do. Our Farmers Club planted 700 saplings, all healthy now. Through these changes, we’ve been able to raise our income from 15,000 rupees to 50,000 rupees.
