Nagpur Model for Food Security during #COVID19

At Nagpur Municipal Corporation, we have created a model for food security to make sure that no one in Nagpur Municipal Corporation region sleeps hungry during the current Covid pandemic. We call this as the Nagpur Model for Food Security. This model is a Public-Private People Partnership (PPPP) which NMC has created by partnering with our partners (Resource and Service provider like Philanthropists, Individuals, NGOs, Institutions & Organisations) & connecting to the beneficiaries. NMC is playing the pivotal role of aggregator and moderator.

This model has proven to be thriving and self-sustaining as this model does not burden the state exchequer. Till today not a penny has been spent from government for feeding the homeless, beggars, destitute, senior citizens, disabled & people without any support and yet achieves the mission of ‘Food for All’ with utmost efficiency.

The three critical pillars of this model are Aggregation, Preparation and Distribution. In Aggregation, we collect and allocate the Financial and Non-Financial (Ingredients) resources to our partners and community kitchens based on their requirements and past performances. Our partners and community kitchens then  prepare a particular number of meals at a set time maintaining hygienic food, non-plastic packaging and social distancing norms. These cooked food packets are then distributed to people, who have approached us on our dedicated helpline number and have been verified for their authenticity in demand, at their doorsteps. (beneficiary is verified on the basis of Aadhar card/ration card, etc for which software has been created which verified data from PDS for availing of PDS services). Feedback is collected from them, and our distribution personnels efficiency is then mapped on a regular basis.

With the help of this model, NMC has served more than 12 Lakhs+ meal and is prepared to fight the battle of Hunger for all the people under NMC limit during the current Corona pandemic. Even infants and babies whose parents are poor and cannot afford nutrition are provided the requisite nutrition through our partners.

As a result, we have been able to provide succour and relief to the most needy and vulnerable sections of society during the current pandemic. More than 45,000 beneficiaries have been identified and being provided daily needs of food & nutrition with the help of partners without single penny being spent by the government. This reflects on the sensitive and people centric approach of Governance.
