Sandeshkhali-I is a less developed block of the Sundarbans Delta. As per the Census 2011, the population is 1,64,214. The population of SC community and ST community is 26,321 and 21,635, respectively. The maximum number of people fall BPL (Below Poverty Line). Most of the people generate their income through fishing. There are 4000 Self Help Groups (SHG) with 40000 women members in Sandeshkhali-I & II blocks. They lack knowledge about computers and it’s day to day relevance in the present time. Digital knowhow is essential to connect with the outer world. For them, knowledge about digital money transfer as well as online banking is also of importance.
We are providing free digital literacy to the SHG members so that they can maintain their cash book digitally and transfer the money through online banking system. Apart from this, they also learn how to book tickets online, fill up various kinds of online forms, etc. We have trained 120 SHG members and our training program will continue till all the SHG members are trained.
Majority of trained SHG members are now generating their income through data entry and online work. With the help of Linde IS Kolkata, we are going to set-up four online service centres to provide employability to these trained women.
Poor quality of education and low literacy rate is yet another challenge of this area. Due to poverty, the students are not able to afford extra tuitions to upgrade their education. We are providing free coaching to 120 students per year so that they can upgrade their quality of education and knowledge.
